In September 2026, Blybahn moved from Microsoft Azure to the European cloud provider Scaleway. Our data was already stored in Europe. With this step, our hosting is now also provided by a European company. It's a deliberate choice for European technology and greater independence.
Why we made this move
Blybahn needs to be stable, secure and fast. To make that happen, we use servers that store and process your posts, photos, groups and stickies behind the scenes. We rent the computing power and storage we need from a specialised company: a cloud provider. Until recently, we used Microsoft Azure's European data centres for this.
Every few years, our parent company Zooma takes a fresh look at which provider best fits the needs of Blybahn and its other platforms, the wishes of our users and our plans for the future. We look beyond the country where the servers are located. Which country's laws does the provider fall under? How dependent are we on that company's technology? And how easily could we switch if we wanted to? These questions matter if we want to stay in control of the systems behind Blybahn.
Based on these considerations, we chose Scaleway, a European cloud provider with data centres in Europe. Scaleway focuses on giving you control over your own data and systems, and on technology that can also be used with other providers. That fits our wish to keep choosing for ourselves where and how Blybahn runs.
A lot of work you don't see
A move like this takes careful preparation and extensive testing, so the app, your groups and your memories keep working just as before. We moved all data to the new environment carefully, step by step.
Our colleagues put a lot of time and care into this. Users see little of it, but it's exactly this behind-the-scenes work we're proud of. It lays the foundation for Blybahn's further development.
Taking information security seriously
Alongside our hosting choices, we keep investing in information security and independent assessment. Our parent company Zooma has been ISO 27001 certified for years, the international standard for information security.
Zooma also has its platforms tested regularly by external parties. In these penetration tests, specialists try to find security vulnerabilities, so they can be fixed before anyone else discovers them.
On Blybahn, you share your best moments with the people you care about. That trust calls for careful choices, clear agreements and regular checks on how we protect your data.
What does this mean for you?
This move doesn't add any visible new features to the app. Everything keeps working the way you're used to. The improvement is behind the scenes: we've chosen a European cloud provider and have more freedom to decide where and how Blybahn runs. It's also an investment in the foundation we'll keep building new features on.
And if you want to know where your photos and messages are stored, the answer is now simple: on servers in Europe, with a European provider.
